Adaptive Adventures: Making the Outdoors Available to Everyone

by The Fullest Project

When we think about outdoor adventures — hiking mountain trails, kayaking through rapids, camping under the stars — we don't always think about accessibility. But Adaptive Adventures is changing that narrative, one trip at a time.

What They Do

Adaptive Adventures is a Colorado-based nonprofit that provides outdoor adventure experiences specifically designed for individuals with all types of disabilities. Their programs include:

  • Adaptive skiing and snowboarding with specialized equipment and trained guides
  • Kayaking and water sports with modified boats and safety support
  • Cycling programs with handcycles, recumbent trikes, and tandem bikes
  • Rock climbing, hiking, and camping with accessibility support for all ability levels

Why It Matters

For many families in the disability community, outdoor recreation can feel out of reach. Equipment isn't adapted, trails aren't accessible, and programs don't accommodate different needs. Adaptive Adventures removes those barriers.

Their approach isn't about creating a separate experience — it's about making the same experience available to everyone. Participants join alongside their peers, building confidence, friendships, and a genuine connection with the outdoors.
